WILL OF JOHN CAPNE,
CARLTON COLVILLE, SUFFOLK, 1638
To the poor of Carlton 10s., to be paid by executor within half a year of testator's death, paid amongst the poor in such sort as every poor man and woman may have part as the ministers and churchwardens shall direct. To daughter MARY CAPNE #40, paid thus #20 in one year and #20 in two years of testator's death in or at the mansion house where testator now dwells in Carlton, by executor and the said MARY to give receipt for the same; also the best featherbed, one feather bolster, one coverlet, one blanket, one trundle bedstead which testator lies on in the parlour, with mat and line, one little new chair, one little buffet stool, one great chest or 12s. of money in lien thereof, one kettle, to be delivered to her in one month of testator's death. To grandchild ELINOR BREMER #5 when 21. To prentice JOHN ANISSE, 2 lambs or else in lieu thereof 8s. to be paid by executor in one month into the hands of testator's son WILLIAM CAPNE he to hold the same sum to the use of the said JOHN ANISSE. To grandchild WILLIAM CAPNE 10s. in one year of testator's death, paid by executor into the hands of WILLIAM CAPNE his father, testator's son, for him to hold to the use of the said grandchild WILLIAM CAPNE. To grandchildren WILLIAM & ANN BREMER 20s. each when 21. To daughter ELIZABETH BREMER 5s. a year paid by executor, payment to start in one year next after testator's death, and to be paid for her life. Whereas son JOHN CAPNE is bound in #20 to pay to testator #10, now the said JOHN is to pay the #10 to whomsoever testator now appoints, namely to grandchild ELINOR BREMER #5 when 21 and she is to make a discharge thereof unto the said JOHN; also 40s. thereof to testator's daughter ELINOR STERRY within four years of testator's death and she to give a discharge thereof unto the said JOHN; also to grandchildren NATHANIEL & ANN STERRY 30s. each -- these sums to be paid by the said JOHN unto their father NATHANIEL STERRY for him to hold to the use of his two children, within four years of testator's death, and the said NATHANIEL is to give discharge for these sums unto the said JOHN. The bond is to remain and continue in the hands of testator's son ROBERT CAPNE until all these sums be paid, and then the bond is to be delivered to the said JOHN on demand, he showing lawful, discharges for the payment of the said sums. In regard testator formerly forgave two other bonds of #10 each to the said JOHN therefore testator wills and requires the said JOHN to pay yearly unto ELIZABETH BREMER, testator's daughter, the sum of 5s. a year for life, payment beginning one year next after testator's death; and also JOHN to pay unto ELINOR, ELIZABETH & MARY CAPNE, testator's grandchildren 40s. each when they reach 21. Residue of goods, moveables, chattels, cattle, implements of household and husbandry to go to testator's son ROBERT, he to be executor and pay debts and legacies.
