WILL OF MARTHA STERRY,
WORCESTER ,1828
I Martha Sterry of High Street in the City of Worcester Spinster do make my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say I will and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses be first paid I also will and direct that an annuity of ten pounds per annum be purchased by my executors hereinafter named as soon as conveniently can be after my decease with money to be taken from my stock or funds in that three per cent consols (see note) for my sister Jane Sterry now residing with my brother Robert Sterry at Bish(Bishops?) Froome(Frome?) in the county of Hereford clerk and watch maker for the term of her natural life and which I hereby give and bequeath to her accordingly and direct to be made payable to her in equal half yearly payments in each year I also give to my said sister Jane Sterry over and above the said annuity the sum of five pounds sterling money and direct the same to be paid to her forwith after my death and likewise one third part of the whole of my whole of my clothes and new pair of linen sheets two pair of linen pillow cases and one cotton counterpain And I will and direct that my said sister shall receive the whole of the said bequests free and clear of all legacy duty & other charges whatsoever which I direct to be paid by my said Executors I give and bequeath unto my nephew George Sterry of High Street in the said city of Worcester Carver & Gilder two hundred pounds stock in the three per cent consols and direct the same to be transferred or paid to him as soon as convenient after my decease I also give and bequeath unto my said nephew George Sterry the whole of my furniture plate linen and books metal watch and all my linen what I have herein before given to my said sister Jane Sterry I give to my nephew Richard Sterry of Worcester aforesaid Mason one hundred and fifty pounds stock in the three per cent consols free of legacy duty and direct that same to be transferred or paid to him as soon as convenient after my death I give and bequeath unto Mary Sterry the wife of my said nephew George Sterry one third part of that whole of my clothes and to Lucy Ann Sterry Eliza Sterry and Mary Catherine Sterry the three daurs (daughters) of my said nephew George Sterry I give and bequeath the remaining third part of my clothes and direct that the same may be carefully preserved by my Exors (executors) for them until they respectively attain their respive(respective?) ages of twenty one years and then to be equally divided amongst them but my will and desire is that none of my clothes be removed from the care of my Exors or divided until twelve months after my death and my will wish and particularly desire & request is that I may be buried as plain and decent and with as little expence as possible and as near to the place of abode where I may happen to sit as conveniently may be and as to all the rest and residue of my personal property whatsoever and wheresoever not herein before otherwise given & bequeathed or disposed of I give & bequeath the same subject to the payment of my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses herein before by me directed to be first paid unto my said nephew George Sterry for his own sole use absolutely And I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said nephew George Sterry and Charles Augustus Hoare of No 30 Kensington Square Kensington in the county of Middlesex Gentleman the Exors of this my will and hereby revoke and make vow all former and other wills and will by me at any other time made and declare this only which is contained in two sheets of paper to be and to contain my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal that is to say my hand to the first sheet thereof and my hand and seal to the second and last sheet thereof this fourth day of December one thousand and eight hundred and twenty seven Martha Sterry - Signed sealed published declared by this said Martha Sterry the testatrix as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in her presence at her request & in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses thereto- Saml Rigg Solr (solicitor) London Road Worcester Chas Blandy his clerk
Proved at London 6th ffebruary 1828 before the Worshipful Defoe(?) Addams Doctor of Law and Surrogate by the oath of George Stery the nephew and one of the Executors to whom administration was granted being first sworn duly to administer power reserved to Charles Augustus Hoare the other Executor
Note: 'Consols' are an abbreviation for consolidated stock: unredeemable government stock first issued in the 18th Century as a consolidation of the National debt.
