WILL OF MARY STERRY,
MIDDLESEX, 1791

 

In the Name of God Amen
I Mary Sterry widow Nurse of the thirteenth Ward of Royal Hospital at Chelsea being yet of sound mind and understanding but very weak in body do make publish this my last Wiull and Testament in manner following (that is to say) I commend my Soul to the mercy of an all beneficient God humbly hoping for remission of my sins through the merits and intercession of my ever blessed Redeemer It is my desire to be buried in the same manner as my late husband was And as to all and singular my money stocks ffunds goods property and effects whatsoever I give and bequeath the same in manner following that is to say I give my fflowered linen gown and one of my ___(?) aprons to my niece Ann Houghton of Chelsea aforesaid widow and my silk gown to Rose Laisgue wife(?) of John Laisgue of Chelsea Hospital aforesaid Gentleman All the rest and residue of my property I give and bequeath my much respected ffriends the said John(?) Laisgue and Edward Legg of Chelsea aforesaid victualler and my said niece Ann Houghton upon trust to convert so much thereof as shall not consist in bonds or stocks into money (and after payments of all my debts and funeral expenses and the expenses of proving(?) my Will and two shillings each to my bearers and paul bearers) to pay the legacy of ten pounds I hereby give to my younger sister Nannette of William Steplieus of Ghent in Fflanders Labourer and to pay transfer and divide all the rest of my money stocks and property unto and equally between my brother John de Vriez of Ghent aforesaid Cluc___(?) weaver and my elder sister Joanna wife of John de Langer of Ghent aforesaid gardener in equal shares and I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made and do declare this alone to be true last Will and Testament and thereof I so appoint my said ffriends John Laisgue and Edward Legg and my said niece Ann Houghton to be executors and executrix In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the eighth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one The mark and seal of Mary Sterry - Signed sealed published and declared the words "and one on my sated aprons" being first interlined by the said testatrix Mary Sterry as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who at her request in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witness - J. Cooper, Paradice Row Chelsea - Betty Lawson.

This Will was proved at London the twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one before the Worshipful John Ffisher Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Hon'ble Sir William Nyume Knight Doctor of Laws Master of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the path of Edward Legg one of the executors named in the said Will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the deceased having been first sworn duly to administer power reserved of making the like grant to John Laisgue and Ann Houghton widow the niece of the said deceased and the other executors named in the said Will when they or either of them shall apply for the same.
