WILL OF SAMUEL STERRY,
SURREY, 1705
In the Name of God Amen. The four and twentieth day of November Anno Dei one thousand seven hundred and five And in the fourth yeare of the Reigne of our Soveraigne Lady Anne by the Grace of God Queen of England Scotland ffrance and Ireland defender of the ffaith ex I Samuell Sterry citizen and habberdasher of London being at this time sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory (praised be God) In regard of the uncertainty of this present transitory life doe therefore make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and forme following (that is to say) ffirst and principally I commit my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker and creator and of his Sonn Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeeemer through the alone merritts of whose most bitter death I stedfastly hope to be saved my body I commit unto the Earth from whence it came to be in decent and Christian like manner brought to the ground and buryed at the discretion of my Executor herein after named And as touching and concerning all my worldly goods and estate wherewith the Lord of his mercy hath been pleased to be blessed I doe give and dispose of the same (after my debts paid and ffunerall expenses discharged in manner and forme following (that is to say) Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my loving cozen Mr John Mason the sume of twenty pounds of lawful money of England to buy him mourning Item I give and bequeath to my loveing friend Mr Joseph Dunwell the sume of forty pounds of lawfull money of England to buy him and his wife mourning Item I give and bequeath unto my loveing uncle Mr Joseph Sterry the sume of tenn pounds of lawfull money of England Item I give and bequeath unto my loveing cozen Sarah Sterry (the daughter of the said Joseph Sterry) the sume of twenty pounds of lawfull money of England Item I give and bequeath unto my loveling cozen John Sterry of Wandsworth in the county of Surrey the summe of ten pounds of lawfull money of England. Item I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Thompson the sume of five pounds of lawful money of England Item I give and bequeath unto my maid servant Judith Ives the sume of tenn pounds of lawfull money of England Item I give and bequeath unto my loveing friend Mr James White the sume of five pounds of lawfull money of England Item I give and bequeath unto my loveling friend William Surflet Scriver the sume of twelve pounds current English money the rest residue and remainder of all and singular my ready moneys debts oweing to me Goods Chattells and Estate whatsoever and wheresoever both reall and personall (not herein before disposed of bequeathed or appointed) I doe wholly give devise and bequeath the same to my loveing brother Mr Benjamin Sterry his heires executors and Administrators And I doe make & ordaine him my said loveing brother Benjamin Sterry full and sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament And lastly I doe hereby revoke all former and other Wills whatsoever by me made or spoken and none to stand in force but this my Will only In witnesse whereof to this my last Will and Testament containing two sheetes of paper I have set my hand and seale to either sheete and affixed my seale for the whole or topp of the first sheete dated the day and yeare in the first sheete first above written. Samuell Sterry signed sealed published and delivered by the said Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of John Campion(?) Probatum fuit huius Testamentum apud London coram venti viro Willimo Clements Legum Doctore Surrogato Ventis et Egregii viri dni Richardii Raines Militis Legum etiam Doctoris Curia Prerogativa Cantuar Magistri Custodis sive Comissarii ltime constituti quinto die mensis Decembris Anno Dni Millimo Septingesimo quinto Iuramento Benjamini Sterry fratris dicti defuncti et Extoris in dicto Testamento nominat cui commissa fuit administrato omnium et singulorum bonorum jurium et creditorum dicti defuncti de bono et fideliter admtrando eadem ad Sancta Dei Evangelia jurat
This will was proved at London before the Worshipful William ClementsDoctor of Laws Surrogate of the Venerable and Distinguished Richard Raines Doctor of Laws Master Keeper Commisary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted on the fifth day of December in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and five by the oath of Benjamin Sterry brother of the said deceased and Executor named in the said will to whom administration was granted of all and singular goods chattels and credits he having been first sworn duly to administer on the holy Gospel of God.
