WILL OF THOMAS STERRY, CITIZEN
AND GOLDSMITH OF LONDON 1578

 

In the name of god amen The ixth day if October in the yeare of our Lord god a thousand five hundred seaventy eight and in the xxth yeare of the raigne of our sovaigne (sovereign) Ladye Quene Elizabeth by the grace of god of England ffrannce and Ireland quene xr (excetera) I Thomas Sterrye citizen and goldsmith  of London being sicke of bodye hole of mynd and in good and pfecte (perfect) nenorye dooth make my last will and testament in manner and forme following That is to sait (say) I bequeth my soule unto god the father the sonne and holly ghost three psons (persons) and one god in whome is the onely hope of my redemcon (redemption) through his mercye and not by any merite of myne my bodye to be buried in Paules Church yard as neare to the place where my late children were buried as may be conveniently Item I will and give unto the poore xxd that is to sait xd to the poore children of Christs hospitall and xd to the poore of the pishe (parish) of Christs Church Item I will and give to the vicars of Paules to be merrye(?) together twentie shillings Item I will and give to the wardens and companye of pishe xxs (tweny shillings) Item I will and give unto my loving wief Elizabeth thirtie poundes __(?) and above(?) any other person that is or shalbe __(?) unto her. Item I will and give unto my sonne Elias Sterrye a costed(?) salt(?) of silver pcoll(?) guilt weying(weighing) xviii or xix ounces more or less wch was my mothers Item I will and give unto Jane Sterrye my daughter a goblet pcell(?) guilt weying as I suppose ten ounces. Item I will and give unto Jarrett Sterrye my sonne a dozen of spones (spoones) of pcoll(?) guilt weying as I thincke xii or xiii ounces (written above the line the surving(surviving?) to be the others heire) Item I will and give unto Alice Lyssout my mayde (maid) fortie shillings to be paid unto her at the discrecon (discretion) of my executors hereunder written and named And I will that Elizabeth my wief shall have the governing of my three children above said during their minoritie and as nature doeth bynd her to be good unto them and to have their pts(parts?) and porcons(portions) in her owne custedye (custody) during their said minoritye putting in suertie(surety?) sufficient according to the laudable order used in this citie of London And if yt happen my said wief marrye after my decease I will that he that god shall appoint her to marrye shall putt in sufficient suertie before the daye of marring according to the said laudable order of this citie for the pformance of all bequests and legacyes given by me and by the order of this cities to be done And I will and ordaine my said wief Elizabeth and Elias my sonne to be my faithfull executors to thid my last will and testament And I utterly revoke and adnull all and any other testaments wills and bequests before this time by me made willed and bequeathed desiring my deare frendes Steven Durant citizen and goldsmith of London and Thomas Hartoppe citizen and goldsmith of London to be comforters and overseers to and of this my last will and testament to the comforte of my said wief And to other of them I will and give xxs (twenty shillings) for their paines taking in the same. Drurye(?) legum doctore curie prerogative caut comissario apud London sexto die mentis novembris anno die millimo quinqentesimo septuagesimo octavo Juramento Elizabethe relicto et executricis in hr__od(?) testamento nomt cui comissa fuit admidstraco bovord(?) xr(excetera?) de bone xr(excetera?) inrat(?) A_seruata(?) ptate(?) similem comissiorem(?) fecion_(?) Eliz Sterye executori etiam in hu__(?) testamento noiate(?) cui(?) venerit xr(excetera?) admissur(?)

The will written above was probated in the presence of William(?) Drurye(?) Doctor of Laws Commissary of the Prerogative Court of London on the sixth day of November one thousand five hunded and seventy eight Elizabeth relict and executrix named in said will to whom administration of property was granted(?) Elizabeth Sterry sworn by commissioner to administer(?)

Note: Thomas Sterry has not been as yet connected to any known Sterry line. However, Walter Smith in his book 'The Sterry Family' includes detail on Thomas and his family (see page 197) as a miscellaneous and unconnected person. This Thomas is also mentioned in Boyd's Inhabitants of London:
